Post subject:  California Smog requirements for 318

Hello

I am about to purchase my one and only CA Smog eligible (I. E. newer than 1975 model year) MOPAR. All my rigs are 1974 or older because those are the coolest styling years in Chrysler Corporation history (except for the MACHO POWER WAGONS !)
My new MACHO is a 1978 that is a non numbers matching 318. Any / all advice on getting this 318 set up to pass California DMV Smog Test greatly appreciated !

They may require you to place all of the emissions equipment on the vehicle if there is a similar emissions configuration applicable here, which is a good likelihood considering that it is a dodge truck. It would be nice to know where it is coming from, and where your at...there are a couple of non-emissions counties left in CA.
hope that helps

Thank you Palomino & Last440!

I am located in a non-emission zip code: 90704

Santa Catalina Island!

Just brought over a 1991 Suzuki Samurai to tour the Island 'interior' and no one ever asked for any smog docs whatsoever!

MACHO will be SoCal mainland rig. Buying it out of the MidWest. Any leads on LA smog shops that can deal with a classic POWERWAGON much appreciated

Thank You for this excellent resource!

When you register your truck. DMV will require a smog certificate. DO NOT TRY to get the certificate before registration. Have DMV issue a 60 day temp Registration (usually automatic when no cert is supplied) so you can legally drive the truck..............Post photos of the engine compartment so I and other members of this site will tell you what is not there or hooked up correctly. "DO NOT Try to get a certificate at any smog station untill the system has been adjusted and inspected by a non smog inpection shop.........The consequence of trying to get a certifcate before all the system is back on, will require new parts to be installed stated by California Emission Law. A lot of the emission parts are not available new. But if used or working parts are installed before the inspection, makes the installed parts OEM. Lastly.....Do not trust CARB new parts certification numbers for emission parts "OK" by California BAR. Try to stick with original equipment parts (new or used)
Pick & Pull Wrecking Yards are the best and cheapest source of OEM emission parts. Their web site is great for locating the years of truck parts you will need, without visiting the yards with a "no find, wasted trip" scenario.
Photos are of my '79 Warlock before and after California Smog inspection certification. I followed the procedure as stated above.
