I need some help on VIN decoding for my 1979 stepside. I've looked thru my 79 service manual to no avail. An old Hayes manual has the correct engine based on the P for engine code but it says 1980. Its a 318 4bbl california model. 79 service manual has no code for P engine. VIN is D13AP9S228921. This is verified. Does anyone have a 1980 factory service manual showing a P for engine code? On line stuff is mostly incorrect. Its not a 413 ci. Even original sales brochure is inconclusive. Thanks.

I have a book I purchased from "The Dodge Connection" on line that has that "p" code for 318 engine. I have not literally seen the 318 4v in any 1979. But that doesn't mean anything. I have seen one in a Special order 1980 200 long wheel base Utility bed though. Here's some photos of the page and book that can be purchased though the The Dodge Connection. I thinks its about $40.

Your V.I.N. is correct for '79 318 4V. That cannot be changed from the original factory issue.
Are you having some Smog equipment problems for verification at an inspection Station? What I found is a lot of these inspection stations don't have the hard copie books that to go back to those '70 vehicles. They are only supplied with a computer spec sheet.
You may have to go to a State Arbitration Station for verification. I can get some photos of the equipment installed on the '80 318 4V Truck if you need it for reference. It's a totally stock truck.

Thanks for the replies. I have the "Book". It's got some good info. I have all of the proper smog stuff now and it passes fine. (I still can't find a 30 second (Black) EGR control module that works. I have 3 that are toast.) Just wondering why the factory service manual does not have the notation for the P vin. It has the proper vacuum hose diagrams for the LD/MD 1979 318 4bbl for California as well as other stuff. I'm an originality freak and like to have all the stuff back to factory delivered (within reason). I did see a note on a sales brochure that made the note 318 4bbl requires 727 trans. as an export. Smog referee guy with state of Calif. found the P vin in their stuff and said it was a California Only deal. That is what I'm really trying to investigate. Any Mopar documentation is always welcome.

it is a california only deal. they also made a 318 4bbl engine for 78 for california only, but had same vin code as the 2bbl engine. have a couple of trucks that have the "P" code engines in them
